Expect Traffic Stops on Shawville Bridge Job

Six-week detour will go into effect April 27

CLEARFIELD – With work to replace the Shawville Truss Bridge on Route 970 continuing, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation cautions area drivers that they may encounter intermittent lane closures this week in the project area.

From Monday through Friday, drivers could encounter lane closures on Route 970 in the Shawville area. Flaggers could be in the roadway and drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution.

Dependent on work activity, flagging could be in place around the clock – especially late in the week. The lane closures are necessary so the contractor can perform slope excavation and remove, re-align and reconstruct the new roadway.

The new bridge is being built upstream from the existing one, allowing PennDOT to keep the truss bridge in service through much of the construction. When work is finished this summer, area drivers will benefit from smoother, safer travel over a modern structure.

As work continues, a 38-day detour for Route 879 will go into effect on April 27. The detour will make use of Route 879, Interstate 80 and Route 970. Signage will be in place to alert motorists to the detour and PennDOT will issue a reminder before it goes into effect. PennDOT expects the detour to be in place through June 3.

Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $5 million project. All work is weather and schedule dependent.
