Small plane crashes in Florida; 4 people presumed dead

Four people were presumed dead Sunday after their small plane crashed near an airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Authorities have not identified those on board. The cause of the crash was also not immediately clear.

The twin-engine plane crashed northwest of the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport on Sunday afternoon, according to Fort Lauderdale Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Heiser.

The plane didn’t hit any structures, he said.

According to Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Piper PA-31 aircraft was inbound to the airport when it went down. It crashed into a nature preserve after declaring an emergency, she said in a statement.
