Spartanburg, SC (WHNS) — Brantley and Ashton, both nearly 12 weeks old, came into the world under difficult circumstances.
The twins were born after a car accident that later claimed the life of their 19-year-old mother, Ashton Hughes. Hughes was in a wreck on Skylin Drive in January while driving from an appointment at Mary Black Hospital.
In her last moments, Hughes’ thoughts were on her children. Dixie, her then-11-month-old daughter was in the car at the time of the wreck but was uninjured.
Doctors said Hughes, in her last words, asked them to “take care of my babies” and asked if Dixie would be OK. Hughes’ father, Eric Hughes, said she was able to see the newborn twins before she passed away.
The twins’ survival in this type of circumstance is rare, doctors said, and it was crucial that they were able to be delivered just minutes after the accident.
Despite being born amid tragedy and overcoming slim odds, Brantley and Ashton have not only survived, they have grown and thrived.
Now-grandfather Eric Hughes said the two are doing well and, despite a few non-serious medical problems, they are healthy.
The twins and Dixie spent the day with Hughes on Sunday after being released from the hospital a few weeks prior.
