State Police: Bad Checks Circulating in Clearfield Co.

CLEARFIELD – The Pennsylvania State Police have received information regarding unknown persons using bad checks as a method of payment in the Clearfield County area.

According to state police, persons are allegedly using Pennswoods to contact sellers and to express interest in merchandise. Additionally, persons are allegedly sending via mail a “look-alike certified check” to the seller.

Upon investigation state police found errors, including that the top, left-hand portion of the check didn’t have a listed address, which is required; the memo noted “avoid after 90 days,” which is a spelling error; and the check only showed one signature on the front when two are required.

State police noted the aforementioned errors were verified by the American Bank & Trust.
