Wozniak Promotes Bill to Eliminate Inspections on New Cars

HARRISBURG – Sen. John Wozniak’s (D-Cambria) proposal to scrap safety inspections for vehicles less than two-years-old continues to be the subject of news reports.

“It simply costs too much and consumers expend too much time taking new cars for safety inspections,” Wozniak said. “New vehicles do not need to be inspected in the first two years after they were manufactured.

“New car warranties generally cover any defects and it’s fairly unlikely that a brand new car would experience serious safety issues unless the vehicle was defective off the assembly line.”

Wozniak recently discussed his proposal in a recent national news report. That report detailed efforts in Mississippi aimed at totally eliminating safety inspections, in addition to focusing on the legislator’s bill.

The veteran lawmaker did not agree that Pennsylvania should go as far as what Mississippi is contemplating, but said that stopping safety inspections for a car’s first two years seems reasonable.

Wozniak is also a cosponsor and strong supporter of legislation (Senate Bill 353) eliminating emissions inspections for all vehicles for five years after the model year.
