Campus Corner: Wriglesworth Places 10th in PSAC 100 Backstroke

YORK — California University of Pennsylvania sophomore Krystal Wriglesworth (Clearfield) qualified for the 100-yard backstroke consolation finals and placed 10th at the 2015 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in the Graham Aquatic Center Saturday.

She posted a time of 59.22 seconds in the evening session after touching in a season-best 59.17 for 11th place in the preliminaries that had 50 swimmers.

Wriglesworth had a career-best 2:12.89 in the 200 back Sunday, placing 25th among 41 qualifiers, and a season-best 25.91 in the 50 freestyle Thursday, placing 49th among 72 qualifiers.

Also on Thursday, she opened with a 27.60-second backstroke split as the Vulcan 200 medley relay foursome turned in a season-best 1:48.23. Wriglesworth was followed by senior Brittany Reamer, sophomore Jade Arganbright and freshman Vanessa Breunig.

The Vulcans were eighth in the 13-team field with 224 points.

YORK — Edinboro freshman Kara Thorp (Clearfield) recorded career-best times in three events at the 2015 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in the Graham Aquatic Center last weekend.

Her highest finish was 20th in the 30-swimmer 1000-yard freestyle Thursday with a time of 10:56.47, which wiped out her previous mark of 11:39.90.

Thorp cracked the two-minute mark for the first time in the 200 free Friday, posting a 1:58.74 that was good for 28th among 67 qualifiers.

On Saturday, she shaved 14.03 seconds of her old 500 free record to place 27th in 5:19.40. That event had 42 qualifiers.

Thorp closed the four-day meet with a 55.64-second effort in the 100 free on Sunday to finish 43rd among the 69 qualifiers.

She swam in one relay for the Fighting Scots, helping the 800 free quartet make the NCAA Division II ‘B’ Cut with a 7:45.70 while placing fifth. Thorp turned in a 1:59.07 third leg in teaming with senior Staci Schrecengost, junior Charlotte Drozda and sophomore Mary Rosati.

Edinboro earned 241 points to finish right in the middle of the team chase at seventh.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

KENT, Ohio — Clarion sophomore Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) sprinted 60 meters in a season-best 8.37 seconds at the Last Chance Meet in the Kent State Field House Saturday.

She placed 28th in the event that drew 51 entries.

Shomo leaped 14 feet, 5 inches (4.39 meters) but fouled on her next two attempts and had to settle for 26th place among the 30 long jumpers.
