A spokesman for Sen. Rand Paul says there’s been no final decision on whether the Kentucky Republican will run for president, after a report that said Paul is looking at a date in early April to announce his White House plans.
“Speculation to the contrary, Senator Paul has not made a final decision on whether or not to run and therefore has no announcement plans at this time.” Sergio Gor said in a statement Wednesday. Paul’s aides and advisers also deferred to Gor’s statement.
The New York Times reported Tuesday night that the all-but-certain candidate will kick off his campaign April 7, a date that falls at the beginning of the second quarter and would give Paul almost the entire three months to raise money.
According to unnamed associates in the piece, Paul will likely announce his decision from Kentucky before embarking on a swing through the early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Paul, who’s been actively laying the groundwork for a presidential campaign for the past year, has long said that he’s looking at March or April to make a decision.
“We haven’t decided yet, I mean we’re getting close and we’ll make a decision sometime in the March-April timeframe,” he told CNN affiliate WKRC in Cincinnati on Tuesday. “We don’t want to do it just to do it, we want it because, if we do do it, is because we think we can win and that we can provide something to the country that no other candidate can.”
