Obama asks Congress for military authorization to fight ISIS

President Barack Obama asked Congress on Wednesday to formally authorize the use of military force in the war against ISIS, Capitol Hill sources tell CNN.

Lawmakers on Wednesday morning received a draft Authorization for the Use of Military Force a resolution that would formally authorize a six month U.S. military effort against the militant group.

The resolution is expected to give the President a three-year authorization of military force to fight ISIS and is expected to sunset the 2002 authorization of military force that spawned the Iraq War.

There is broad support in Congress for a formal AUMF, though lawmakers disagree on the scope of the military powers that should be handed to the President.

Obama announced during his State of the Union address that Congress needed to formally authorize the military campaign against ISIS.
