TYRONE – The Tyrone Area High School girl’s volleyball team made a donation of $581 to the Tyrone Hospital Foundation with funds to be directed to the hospital’s Breast Cancer & Women’s Health Institute (BCWHI) Breast Cancer Voucher Program.

The Breast Cancer Voucher Program provides support to patients of BCWHI with breast cancer who are uninsured or underinsured to help ease financial pressures.

Members of the Tyrone Area High School girl’s volleyball team and the Tyrone Area High School girl’s volleyball boosters raised the funds donated via fundraisers held before and during their first Cancer Awareness Game.

A  Cancer Awareness T-shirt sale was held, and the players also sold signs during school lunch sessions. Students could purchase the signs to remember or honor loved ones. The signs were then displayed at the Cancer Awareness Game.  A bake sale was also held at the game.

Volleyball team members said they contributed to the Breast Cancer Voucher Program because it is a program that helps local women and because of the good work the BCWHI does for patients and families. The team members and boosters said many of them can relate to the unmet needs people have when there is a severe illness in the family.

While the volleyball team’s Cancer Awareness Game was held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the team wanted to use the game to bring awareness to the many forms of cancer that have touched their lives in some way.  This was accomplished by having each team member wear socks in a color that represented awareness for a certain type of cancer.
