Just when New England had dug out…more snow

Just when Northeasterners had shoveled their way out of feet of blizzard snow, here comes the weather to mess things up again.

New flakes and more wind are coming, the National Weather Service says. But they luckily won’t hold a candle to the stormy mess that hit early this week.

It dumped feet of white. Worcester, Massachusetts, for example, received a record 34.5 inches from Monday through Wednesday.

This new weather system will drop inches — three to six in Boston between early Friday and late Saturday. Lows will slip into the single digits over the weekend.

More snow should fall further inland and farther north. Portland, Maine, should see nearly a foot by the time the so-called clipper system has swept through.

It gets its name from clipper ships, sailing vessels known for their cutting speed, the weather service says. Clipper systems swoop down from western Canada to the east.

This one will also drive down northerly winds at 10 to 20 mph, gusting up to 35 mph.

That may be hardly a breeze compared to the gales that recently drove snow drifts up to eight feet and pounded the Massachusetts shoreline for hours at about three times that strength.

In Marshfield, those winds drove in waves that smashed down a seawall and significantly damaged 11 homes.

Though not as mighty, the coming clipper system’s gusts combined with the temperature drop could knock the wind chill down into minus degrees.
