Patricia Arquette paid tribute to her family — a group that’s been acting for more than a century — in accepting her supporting actress SAG Award for “Boyhood.”
“I’m a fourth-generation actor,” she said, visibly overwrought.
If you recognize Arquette’s name, it’s probably not just for her long-running role on “Medium.” Her sister is Rosanna Arquette. Her brother is David Arquette. Her father, Lewis Arquette, was also an actor, and her grandfather, Cliff Arquette, was well-known as the cornpone comedian (and “Hollywood Squares” regular) Charley Weaver.
J.K. Simmons, a familiar face if not necessarily a familiar name, won best supporting actor for his performance in “Whiplash.”
His performance as a brutal music teacher has allowed him to break from the character roles he’s best known for, including J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” movies, Dr. Skoda in “Law & Order,” Vern Schillinger in “Oz” and Assistant Chief Will Pope in “The Closer.”
He’ll have plenty of work in the future, though — as he noted in his speech, his wife, Michelle Schumacher (whom he met acting on Broadway) has become a writer and director after years as a full-time mother.
“I’m sleeping with the director,” he joked.
