ST. MARYS – The Clearfield Bison boys basketball team improved to 12-1 on the 2014-15 season with a victory over St. Marys Friday night on the Flying Dutch home floor.
And it didn’t come easy for Clearfield against a Dutch squad now at 5-8 on the year.
For the third straight contest Clearfield did not play well in the first half as it trailed the Flying Dutch at the break 32-23.
Then came the second 16 minutes and the switch went on for the visiting Bison as they outscored their hosts 43-30 to pick up an unexpected hard fought victory.
And thank goodness for the three point line, as Clearfield drained 11 treys on the night lead by sophomore Tommy Hazel connecting for six beyond the arc.
Hazel had a game high 21 for Clearfield, with Cody Spaid scoring 14, with the help of three three-pointers for the 6‘ 7” junior. Will Myers chipped in with 11 to help pace the Bison offense.
St. Marys also had three players in double figures with Parker Housler leading the way with 17 points. Zach Reigel added 14 and Brady Bauer scored 10.
In the junior varsity game, Clearfield beat the Flying Dutch by a score of a 55-44. Caleb Strouse had 13 with Carter Wood adding 10 for the Bison.
The Bison travel to DuBois for a Monday night encounter with the Beavers. JV action will commence at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
