Sophie M. Jasienski of Clearfield died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 90.

During World War II, Mrs. Jasienski answered her country’s call and worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. She was involved with the manufacturing of the Catalina PBN-1 Amphibious Airplane as a Riveter. Her job was made famous by the “Rosie the Riveter” World War II poster.

After the war, she worked at the General Electric Plant in Philadelphia.

Residing in the Philadelphia area for several years, she met her husband, married and moved to Avondale where she raised her family. She was dedicated to church, family and friends.

She was a part of the Sodality of the Blessed Mother for the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Wilkes Barre, and in Avondale, she was a part of the Altar and Rosary Society of the St. Patrick’s Church of Kennett Square.

Her home was warmly open to all family and friends. Food followed as a part of the fellowship. She would make her famous Polish dishes with ease and share with anyone who would participate. She was a modest chef of Polish culinary delights. She was involved with any church function that needed food or a helping hand.

She moved to Clearfield and was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church.

She is survived by three children, Valerie (Thomas) Carnevale of Clearfield, Anthony Jasienski of Avondale and Rose (Kelly) Ziadie of Potomac, Md.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Amy and Annie Carnevale, Rachael Jasienski, Monica (Tim) Brown, and Jonah, Hannah, Ruth and Naomi Jasienski; three great-grandchildren, Sadie and Ray Brown and Nora Grace Ellenberger; and a sister, Helen Sakosky of Glenolden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jasienski Sr.; her son, John Jasienski Jr.; a sister, Mary Wynoski; and three brothers, Walter, Anthony and John Kosierowski.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Friday at the Kevin A Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield. The Rosary will be recited at 4:45 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 6:45 p.m., both on Friday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother, Avondale, with the Rev. Richard J. Maisano as celebrant. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at the church.

Burial will follow in the St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kennett Square.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Francis Endowment Fund or the Penn Highlands Clearfield Hospice.
