Brutally bitter: Yes, we know it’s winter. But nothing on the calendar can prepare you for this: An arctic blast so brutal that wind chills will dip as low as 50 below zero. Even Florida isn’t immune to freezing temperatures later this week. And if you live in Minnesota … well, good luck.
BOSTON BOMBING TRIAL
30 federal charges: He’s accused of plotting with his brother and carrying out an attack at the Boston Marathon that killed three people, wounded more than 260 and spurred a massive manhunt that terrorized the city for days. And now, almost 19 months after the bombings, jury selection for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s trial begins today. He has pleaded not guilty to more than 30 federal charges, including using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death.
AIRASIA FLIGHT QZ8501
More bodies found: Divers searching the Java Sea for AirAsia Flight QZ8501 are facing a host of challenges trying to recover the plane and all 162 victims. Huge waves. Muddy waters with no visibility. So far, at least 37 bodies have been recovered. Several family members told CNN that they received a letter from AirAsia with preliminary compensation details: about $24,000 for each relative who was on the plane.
OFFICER FUNERAL
American dream shattered: For the second time in two weeks, New York police — joined by officers from across the country — buried one of their own. Detective Wenjian Liu was laid to rest Sunday after he and Detective Rafael Ramos were shot in their squad car. Liu was the only child of two Chinese immigrants who came to fulfill the the American dream. He reached his own dream of becoming an NYPD officer — and thousands of his colleagues came to honor him.
GIRL SURVIVES PLANE CRASH
Lone survivor: She lost her mom, dad, sister and cousin when their small plane crashed. But 7-year-old Sailor Gutzler came out alive. And all by herself, she trekked almost a mile in the dark through rough terrain mired with fallen trees, creeks and ditches to find help. “She’s a terribly brave little girl, I’ll tell you that,” said the man who helped her. “I can’t imagine a 7-year-old doing that.”
