State Police Ask Drivers to Use “Common Sense” during New Year’s Travels

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Drivers are being asked to use “common sense” while traveling during the New Year’s holiday period, announced Captain Bernard J. Petrovsky, commanding officer, Pennsylvania State Police, Troop C, Punxsutawney.

“The New Year’s holiday is very popular with people partaking in libations. Over imbibing alcohol is always a concern; however, where overindulging is mixed with the operation of a vehicle, our concerns become much greater,” stated Petrovsky.

“Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous on many fronts and ultimately against the law. Governed by the alcohol level in your blood, you could spend jail time for a first offense DUI.”

He added, “Law enforcement officers all have recollections of alcohol-related incidents turning lives of innocent people upside down. The best way to ensure your safety as well as other travelers you come into contact with is to abstain completely.”

According to him, those who think that they drink alcohol often still overindulge. He encouraged citizens to use designated drivers, public transportation or to abstain from drinking alcohol. “Your choice will definitely make you feel better at the end of your celebration, knowing you made the correct decision,” he stated.

Petrovsky, on behalf of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop C, would like to wish everyone a safe and happy New Year.
