John C. Himes, 80, a resident of Clearfield for 58 years, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014 at the Ridgeview Elder Care and Rehabilitation Center, Curwensville.

He was born July 15, 1934, in Patton, the son of John W. and Augusta (Theis) Himes.

Mr. Himes was a graduate of Eastern University with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and Shippensburg University with a Master’s degree in education.

He was a career counselor at the Clearfield Vo-Tech and the Reynoldsville Technical School. He retired from the Clearfield Area Scholl District after 25 years of service as a guidance counselor.

He was a veteran and served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard during the Korean War era.

Mr. Himes was a member of the Clearfield Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir for years.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Clearfield Lodge No. 540, the Clearfield Lions Club and the Sparkling Springs Hunting and Fishing Camp.

Mr. Himes was an avid hunter and very involved in community organizations and charities.

He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer A. (Himes) Bush and her husband, Eric of Clearfield; two grandsons, Johnathan and Matthew Bush; two sisters, Barbara Himes and Nancy Roland, both of Columbia, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Himes was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Julia A. (Spencer) Himes, whom died June 19, 2010 and whom he married on Sept. 5, 1959; and a sister, Kathy Lomas.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, beginning with visitation at 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. at the Clearfield Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert J. Mellgard officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by the Clearfield American Legion Post No. 6 and the VFW Post No. 1785 Honor Guard.
A reception will be at the Westminster Hall, located in the church, following services.

Burial will be held at a later date in Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde, at the convenience of the family.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Clearfield Presbyterian Church, 119 N. Second St., Clearfield, PA 16830 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
