Obituary Notice: Amy M. Shirey

Amy M. Shirey, 88, of Woodland died peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, Dec. 15, 2014 at UPMC Altoona.

Mrs. Shirey was born Sept. 30, 1926 in Mineral Springs, the daughter of Jesse “Dick” and Mae (Gearhart) Young.

She had been employed at WT Grant Company, Hallmark Cards in the Clearfield Mall and the former Airplane Marine Factory during World War II to support the war effort.

Mrs. Shirey was Protestant by faith.

She was an avid fan of Penn State and Joe Paterno, Roberto Clemente, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Her favorite sports memory was of Bill Mazeroski’s home run in 1960 to win the World Series. Mrs. Shirey also liked John Wayne movies.

Mrs. Shirey is survived by three children, Janice Elensky and her husband, Gary of Grampian, John W. Shirey and his wife, Sherry of Mineral Springs and Stephen M. Shirey and his wife, Laurie of Pleasant Gap.

She is survived by six grandchildren, John W. Shirey II, Shannon Mayersky, Kristin Coudriet and Brooke A. Shirey, Summer Shirey and Amber Shirey and three great-grandchildren, Dean Coudriet, Claire Coudriet and Dominic Mayersky.

She is also survived by a sister, Doris J. Clapsaddle of Curry Run, two brothers, William P. Young of Grampian and Richard “Sam” Young of Colorado and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John P. Shirey, whom she married Jan. 10, 1951 and whom died April 3, 1989; a step-mother, Helen (Patterson) Young; a grandson, Jason M. Shirey; a sister, Goldie M. Jones; two brothers, Edward J. and James “Jay” Young; and her grandparents, Barney I. and Myrtle Young, whom raised her.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc., with the Rev. Thomas Young officiating. Burial will be at Bradford Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to charity of the donor’s choice.
