(CNN) — Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Gov. Chris Christie’s unapologetic love for the Dallas Cowboys is “pathetic,” adding that it’s rooted in a “basic inferiority complex.”
“If you are a Jerseyite or a Pennsylvanian and you’re rooting for the Cowboys, it means you’re not secure in yourself and you wanted to root for a team that was a team in your youth that was a constant winner,” the Philadelphia Eagles fan said Thursday on a radio show.
Christie has long been clear about his NFL allegiance, saying it’s a loyalty that dates back to when he was fascinated by quarterback Roger Staubach as a kid.
The New Jersey Republican schmoozed with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones last month when the New York Giants hosted America’s team. Last year Christie attended the Giants-Cowboys game in Dallas.
“How can a Jersey guy be a Cowboys fan? It’s pathetic,” Rendell said on the Jon and Sean show on 97.5 the Fanatic.
The Democrat argued that it must be part of “what (Christie) thinks is his mystique, that he’s a tough guy, that he doesn’t care and he’s a Cowboys fan and if you don’t like it, you can shove it.”
“You shouldn’t be rooting for a team that has a scoreboard bigger than most high school football stadiums,” he continued.
While Christie has acknowledged that it’s politically incorrect to be a Cowboys fan in New Jersey, it may be a smart move in the Garden State, which technically doesn’t have an NFL team. Choosing one of the New York teams might not win him many friends in the southern part of the state, close to the Philadelphia Eagles — and vice versa.
