Scottsdale, AZ (KTVK) — Construction workers found what was determined to be an inert grenade in the front yard of a Scottsdale home Wednesday morning, according to police.
The workers were trenching a yard near Camelback Road and 64th Street when they unearthed what appeared to be a grenade, according to Sgt. Ben Hoster with the Scottsdale Police Department.
One of the workers moved the grenade to the backyard to show his boss. Tom McMaster with Sonoran Desert Ridge Development instructed the worker to set it down and called the police.
McMaster was a little shocked at the unusual find and said it “felt like it was the real deal.”
“It looked like it didn’t have a pin in it, but I could see the handle,” McMaster said. “It definitely looked like a grenade.”
Scottsdale officers cleared the immediate area and the Mesa police bomb squad was called to the scene.
The device was X-rayed and determined to be a hollowed-out World War II-era hand grenade, according to Hoster.
“Our advice for citizens if you come across a dangerous or explosive device is definitely don’t touch it, leave it where it is and call the police,” Hoster said.
