10 Keys to Healthy Aging Workshops

Curwensville Community Center

Friday, Dec. 5

You can take ownership of your health and attend educational workshops to learn about the 10 Keys to healthy aging and the many no-cost and low-cost preventative services provided by Medicare to help keep you healthy. The free workshops are taught by certified health ambassadors and APPRISE counselors at the Curwensville Community Center.

A Christmas Story

Reitz Theater

The Reitz Theater in DuBois will conclude its 2014 season with Jean Shepherd’s holiday classic, A Christmas Story Dec. 5-6 and Dec. 11-13 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

This year’s production will also include a toy drive to benefit Toys For Tots. Those attending are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the show.

Tickets are $10 for adults, seniors and students are $8 and Kids 12 and under are $5. The Search for Peace is presented annually by the members of the community and surrounding areas at the Curwensville United Methodist Church. It will be held this year Dec. 5-7.

Unlike other Christmas plays, this pageant is performed entirely in the dark. The story is told entirely through music and narration, using spotlights to present the scenes.

Admission is free to all performances. A freewill offering is taken, however. Group reservations for 10 or more people are accepted and kept until 15 minutes prior to the performances.

Performances will be 8 p.m. Dec. 5; 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Dec. 6 and 4:30 p.m. Dec. 7. The church is located at 602 State St., Curwensville, and can be reached at 814-236-1976.

Taste of the Town Spirit Tour

On Friday, Dec. 5, the Taste of the Town Spirit Tour will be held from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. in downtown Clearfield. Tickets are $20 and include a complementary wine glass, wine and food samples exclusive specials at local shops.

Friday Night Live!

Shepherd & Archibald, a unique musical duo from the Dubois area, will perform Dec. 5 at Friday Night Live!

The duo will perform songs from old and new Irish, Scottish and English folk music. Other songs may also get thrown into the mix.

Friday Night Live! is an open mic/variety show featuring comedy and music at the Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre (CAST). Shows are held at 7 p.m. the first Friday of every month.

Admission is $3 to the family-friendly event.

The “Save the Ritz” Committee has announced that there will be a free movie on Dec. 6. It will be sponsored by the Clearfield, Elk, Cameron and Jefferson Central Labor Council AFL-CIO.

The movie, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey, will be shown at 10 a.m. Families are invited to enjoy the movie before welcoming Santa to town during the Christmas parade.

The Clearfield YMCA Christmas parade will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

The line-up will be on North Third Street between Reed and Locust streets.  The parade will step off on the corner of Third and Locust streets in downtown Clearfield.

Participants will proceed on North Third Street, turning right onto Market Street, right onto North Second Street and right onto Pine Street.

The line-up will include: Sgt. William L. Dixon Detachment Marine Corps League, Clearfield Borough police with Mayor James Schell, Clearfield Bison Marching Band, Animal Welfare Council/Allegheny Spay & Neuter Clinic, Altoona Curve baseball, Children’s Aid Society, Orphans of the Storm, Trinity United Methodist Church, CNB Bank, Girl Scouts, Clearfield YMCA Child Care, “The Grinch,” “Willy the Y Owl,” WOKW 102.9, Clearfield Center for Active Living and the Clearfield Volunteer Fire Department with Santa Claus.

Santa will arrive to Clearfield via a fire truck, and after the parade, all children with parents are invited to join him and Mrs. Claus inside the YMCA gym.  Free hot chocolate, cookies, a stocking and photo opportunities with Santa will be a part of the fun.

Holiday Home & Business Tour

The Downtown DuBois Revitalization Group will present its sixth annual Holiday Home & Business Tour on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.  It is a self-directed tour of seven locations all decorated for Christmas.

This year the reach of the tour has expanded to include a beautiful home in Treasure Lake, as well as lovely homes near Penn State DuBois and in the downtown area.  Business locations include Brady Street Florist, Winkler Gallery of Fine Art and Kreative Kreations.

Tickets are $12. Tickets are available at Merle Norman Boutique, the DDRG, DuBois Chamber of Commerce and Toni Kulbacki Barber Shop. Ticket sales benefit Downtown DuBois holiday events and decor.

DuBois Cultural Church Tour

There will be a DuBois Cultural Church Tour through the DuBois Area Council on the Arts on Sunday, Dec. 7.

You can travel to two churches in the DuBois area and take physical tours around the buildings. You can learn about their history, architecture and any art in the building. Refreshments will be served after the second church tour.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Tribute

Seventy-three years ago on Dec. 7, the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Hawaii was attacked by aircraft from the Imperial Japanese Navy.  America was at war.  On Sunday, Dec. 7, this event will be remembered in a tribute beneath the guns of the battleship USS PENNSYLVANIA, which was a witness to that attack.
