REYNOLDSVILLE – On Nov. 7, Jeff Tech held its Veterans Day program. The assembly included a visit from Jerry “Bull” Baylor, who is the sports director of the Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Baylor showed the students a DVD on adaptive sports and recited a poem he wrote about Vietnam. Baylor served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1966-1970 and was in Vietnam from 1966-1967 as a sergeant and combat engineer.
The next part of the program included a presentation by the DuBois Honor Guard. Members of the honor guard who were present included Anthony Waylonis, Richard Trudgen, Michael Skehan, Richard Wantuck, Joseph Volansky and Dennis Knarr.
These men discussed the meaning of Veterans Day while showing the students the three-volley salute followed by the playing of the song “Taps.” They also showed the students how to fold the flag.
The next part of the program included a visit from a student’s father, Donald Jones, who showed the students some items used in the Revolutionary war. The final part of the program included The American Legion of Reynoldsville, Post 392, represented by Tom Weaver and John Kuntz presenting two Jeff Tech students with certificates and cash prizes for winning a visual arts and essay contest.
Caroline Baker from the cosmetology CTE program at Jeff Tech was awarded the prize for her visual arts submission. Michaela Herndon from the protective services CTE program was awarded the cash prize for her winning essay.
The topic for submissions was, “What does Veterans Day mean to you?” Baker’s visual arts submission was displayed at the program, along with the other visual arts submissions, for everyone at the assembly to see and
Herndon read her winning essay to close the Veterans Day program. The Veteran guests and four Veteran staff members, Troy Conrad, Richard Hoare, Brian Lenkerd and Kevin Kennedy, were provided with a lunch prepared by the staff at Jeff Tech.
