Woman Gets State Prison for Involvement in AK-47 Theft

CLEARFIELD – A woman will spend time in state prison for her involvement in the theft of an AK-47 assault rifle from a local store.

Amy Marie Welker, 33, Clearfield, an inmate of the jail, has pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy/receiving stolen property. She was sentenced to 27 months to five years in state prison.

NY Men Get State Prison in Drug Case

CLEARFIELD – Two New York men charged with bringing drugs into the area were sentenced to state prison during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.

Shaking Devine Saunders, 37, 8418 Rockaway Beach Blvd., Far Rockaway, NY, and Edward Allen, 39, 431 Beach St., Far Rockaway, NY, were charged with various drug offenses after they were found to be in possession of drugs in February in Lawrence Township.

Clearfield Tax Collector Admitted to Bar of U.S. Supreme Court

GREENSBURG – Clearfield County municipal tax administrator, Keystone Collections Group’s Joseph W. Lazzaro, has been admitted to the bar of the nation’s highest court, joining a select group of attorneys who can argue cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Resident Addresses DuBois Council on Disposal Injection Well

DUBOIS – Darlene Marshall opened the public comments portion of the regularly scheduled DuBois City Council meeting as a representative of the residents on Highland Street Extension who are against the proposed disposal injection well.

Last week during the Sandy Township Supervisors’ meeting, Marshall requested a letter of appeal, as a show of support from Sandy Township. This week she requested a similar letter of appeal from DuBois City.

UPDATED: Morrisdale Man Accused of Murdering San Diego, Calif. Man in 2013

KYLERTOWN – A 29-year-old Morrisdale man has been accused of murdering a San Diego, Calif. man, Ronald Bruce Ford, 40, in 2013, according to court documents from Magisterial District Judge Jerome Nevling’s office.

Ryan M. Gaines, 29, of Morrisdale has been charged with criminal homicide; manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; aggravated assault; robbery; theft by unlawful taking; simple assault; and abuse of corpse.

Veterans Honored in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD – Annual Veterans Day services were held Tuesday morning on the front lawn of the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post No. 6.

DuBois Police Investigating Home Invasion

DUBOIS – The investigation is continuing into a home invasion that occurred Tuesday in the Fourth Ward of DuBois City.

According to DuBois City police, the victims reported that at approximately 6 a.m. one woke up and saw two men in her bedroom. One male demanded money and displayed a firearm, police said.

Senator Jake Corman Elected Senate Majority Leader

Senator Jake Corman (R-34) has been elected to serve as Majority Leader of the Pennsylvania State Senate.

Corman previously chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee and has served as a member of the Banking and Insurance, Education, Game and Fisheries, Rules and Executive Nominations, and State Government Committees.

Hearing Continued for Man Accused of Murder

CLEARFIELD – During Centralized Court on Wednesday, the preliminary hearing was continued until Nov. 26 for a 29-year-old Morrisdale man accused of murdering a San Diego, Calif. man, Ronald Bruce Ford, 40, in 2013.

PennDOT District 2 Shows Off New Office Building

CLEARFIELD – The state Department of Transportation (PennDOT), District 2, conducted a media availability tour at its new office building on Wednesday.

District 2 is now located at 70 PennDOT Dr., Clearfield. It’s located on a 9.58-acre site, which is a reclaimed strip mine, according to Marla Fannin, community relations coordinator.

County to Appeal Wal-Mart Tax Decision

CLEARFIELD – Yesterday, the Clearfield County Commissioners voted to file an appeal of the county’s Tax Appeals Board’s decision to reduce the tax assessments of the Wal-Mart Supercenters in Clearfield and DuBois.

About one month ago, the Tax Appeals Board reduced the market and assessed values of the Clearfield Wal-Mart. It also reduced the assessed value of the DuBois Wal-Mart, said Commissioner John A. Sobel, chair.

Borough Committee Recommends Zoning Changes for Riverfront Project

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Code Enforcement Officer Larry Mack reported at last night’s committee meeting that two areas included in the Clearfield County Economic Development Corp. (CCEDC) Riverfront Project will require zoning changes.
