LT Supers to Allow Clearfield School District to Purchase Road Salt

CLEARFIELD – On Tuesday night, the Lawrence Township Supervisors approved allowing the Clearfield Area School District to purchase road salt depending upon its inventory this winter.

Supervisor William Lawhead presented the CASD request. The school district, he said, had plans to plow and salt its own parking lots.  Solicitor James Naddeo confirmed it’d be legal with the request coming from a school district.

The supervisors noted that the CASD offered two proposals for handling the road salt purchases. The township could either purchase and store road salt for the school district, or the township could sell it from their supply.

Regardless of the scenario, the CASD advised the road salt would be picked up during township business hours. “For us to store their salt would almost be unmanageable,” said Supervisor Edward Brown.

The supervisors discussed keeping road salt levels up for the township’s needs.  They decided that the township would come first if there was a road salt shortage during the coming winter.

The supervisors debated how to weigh out the road salt. It was noted that the CASD’s truck would hold a half-ton when fully loaded. However, the supervisors also discussed charging per bucket load.

The supervisors were concerned that the CASD may not get the road salt before storms. It was noted that if it’d start snowing in the morning, township employees would be clearing roadways.
