West Shamokin Tumble Golden Tide, 53-14

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Golden Tide high school football team decided to pick up a game for week 10 instead of taking the week off before the District 9 “A” playoffs that start the weekend of November 7 and 8.

Unfortunately for the Tide, they ran into a hot West Shamokin squad that had won four of its last five contests after dropping the first four battles of the 2014 season.

The Wolves, a AA school out of District 7 (WPIAL), took the game over in the second quarter on its way to a fairly easy 53-14 victory at Riverside Stadium in Curwensville.

The Tide, now 6-4, had four turnovers on the wet, damp and cool evening that helped the Wolves even their record to 5-5.

After a scoreless opening quarter the Wolves tallied three times in the second to take a 21-0 lead at the intermission.

West Shamokin, out of Rural Valley, PA, got two touchdown runs from senior Zac Horner and a 21 yard score on the ground by Andrew Wingard.

Horner added a two point conversion and senior quarterback Alex Lasslo kicked an extra point in the second 12 minutes.

The Wolves would score the first two times they had the ball in the third quarter on a one yard run by Lasslo and a nine yard scamper by Wingard. Lasslo connected on a PAT after the first score to give West Shamokin a commanding 34-0 margin.

Freshman Nick Stewart put points on the board for the Tide at the 8:32 point of third frame on a 70 yard run while the point after failed.

It was the 16th rushing touchdown for Stewart (18 overall) who also went over 1,400 yards on the ground for the year during the game.

West Shamokin put the mercy rule into effect with 3:43 left in the third quarter on a two yard touchdown pass from Lasslo to Wingard with the Lasslo PAT giving the Wolves the required 35 point lead to start the mercy rule at 41-6.

The Wolves would add two more scores in the fourth quarter on a 51 yard run Horner and a five yard run by Brandon Stover. Both extra point attempts failed.

Curwensville would score with 3:29 left in the game on a nine yard run by junior Hunter Johnson. Travis Lansberry passed to Johnson for the two point conversion, setting the final at 53-14 in favor of the Wolves.

The Golden Tide now await the start of the District 9 “A” playoffs with their seed and opponent being announced in the next few days by the District 9 committee.

Ridgway will be the top seed by virtue of its 28-21 win over Cameron County in the Allegheny Mountain League title game on Friday night.
