Obituary Notice: Luther Deuwain Rickard Jr.

Luther Deuwain Rickard Jr., 79, of Clearfield and formerly of Olanta, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clearfield.

Born March 3, 1935 in Glasgow, he was the son of Luther Deuwain and Mary Catherine (Helsel) Rickard Sr. He attended the Curwensville Schools.

He worked for the former Target/Bayer Clothing Company for 43 years until his retirement. He served as plant manager for numerous years. Many of the employees who worked for him considered him to be family.

He served as a deputy waterways patrolman for the Pennsylvania Fish Commission for more than 35 years. He worked closely with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, as well. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He traveled to various states to hunt and fish in different environments.

He was a long-time member of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, the North American Fishing Club and the National Rifle Association. He was an award-winning bass fisherman.

On Dec. 12, 1952 in Clearfield, he wed Joy Ann Winters, whom preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Charlotte Rickard.

Surviving are seven children, Terry Lee Rickard, Cathy Howe and L. Deuwain Richard III and his wife, Debbie, all of Curwensville; Charlotte Irvine and her husband, Lynn of York; Julie Rickard of Clearfield; Debbie Mull and her husband, Mike of Osceola Mills; and James Rickard and his wife, Sherry of Hyde.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two brothers, John A. Rickard of Olanta and Raymond Rickard and his wife, Diane of Virginia and a sister, Donna M. Bennett and her husband, Raymond of Luthersburg.

Funeral services for Mr. Rickard will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville with Pastor Ernest E. Simmers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Turkey Hill, Olanta.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
