Houtzdale Senior Center Receives Grant from Department of Aging

HOUTZDALE – As part of Gov. Tom Corbett’s ongoing commitment to providing programs and services that help older Pennsylvanians lead healthy and dignified lives, the Central Pennsylvania Community Action’s Houtzdale Senior Center was awarded $28,900 as part of the Senior Community Center grant opportunity through the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

The grant awards are intended to advance senior community center projects that will help modernize facilities, encourage technology improvements and expand innovative programming.

The award was part of more than $2 million in grants that were presented to senior community centers throughout the commonwealth. When completed, the grant-funded projects will help ensure the center remains a vital resource for the community, empowering older Pennsylvanians to remain in their communities where they can age and live well.

“The new renovations will attract more seniors and strengthen the center’s financial sustainability, as well as improve the health and wellness of the center,” says Stacy LoCastro, CPCA executive director.

The Houtzdale Senior Center currently serves anywhere from 25-55 seniors in the Houtzdale and surrounding areas each day. The seniors (60 and over or disabled) are provided cooked meals and are engaged in other activities, such as Bingo, singing, presentations, retreats, Wii gaming and day-to-day socialization.

The Houtzdale Family Service Center also offers a wide variety of family services to the public, which the seniors are able to access: thrift store, food pantry, rental assistance, utility assistance, information and referral, etc.

The Houtzdale Senior Center is open for meals on Monday through Thursday with meals being served at 11:30 a.m. For more information about the Houtzdale Senior Center, call Donna Gill at 814-378-5102 or visit us at www.cpcaa.net.
