Sandy Twp. Approves CDBG Project

DUBOIS – A second public hearing regarding the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) preceded the regular Sandy Township meeting on Monday night.

Eugene Zanella shared the supervisors’ intent to request funds to be used towards water systems interconnecting among Merris Avenue, Larkeytown, Slab Run and Fourth Street, as part of a multi-year funded project, which was first initiated in 2011.

The supervisors voted to approve the water systems interconnection as the 2014 CDBG project during the regular meeting.

Silas Platt, the recently retired local race director of the DuBois Area All American Soap Box Derby, read a letter of thanks on behalf of the derby to the supervisors.

Platt thanked the supervisors for their support regarding the June 21 event, which was the sixth annual Soap Box Derby in DuBois.  The race took place on Industrial Drive, a different location than previous years, and included 45 girls and boys.

Also discussed during the meeting was a letter submitted from the supervisors to support the DuBois Public Library in their Keystone Grant Initiative application.

The grant application will request $125,000 to use towards the addition of an elevator and a handicapped accessible restroom, ensuring that all community members are provided access to the facility.

The supervisors voted and unanimously approved state assistance in the amount of $68,712.18 to the Sandy Township Volunteer Fire Relief Association.

Vice Chairman Dave Sylvis elaborated on the funding, stating that “…It’s the tax that was paid [to the state] on fire insurance policies of companies that do business in the state of Pennsylvania that reside outside of the state of Pennsylvania … a tax that they paid for emergency services.  It’s nothing from the township.”
