UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State once again is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world, according to the 2014-15 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, released Oct. 1.
Penn State came in at 58 worldwide, joining schools from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom in the top 100. Penn State ranked at 49 last year.
In addition, Penn State ranks in the top 100 in the world in four out of six subject areas: 43 in social sciences, 54 in life sciences, 62 in physical sciences, and 57 in engineering and technology.
Among North American universities, Penn State ranks at 35 overall and sixth in the Big Ten Conference.
The rankings are based on 13 separate performance indicators which calculate how research-led universities perform across their core missions — from teaching and research to knowledge transfer and international outlook. These 13 elements are brought together into five categories: teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook.
THE has employed the same methodology for its World University Rankings since 2011-12. Visit www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/ for the full rankings and methodology.
