DUBOIS – The DuBois Area Historical Society’s seventh annual Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk will cover more history than ever before when it takes to the streets on Oct. 11.
In November of 1914, the Borough of DuBois voted to become a Third Class City. Much has happened in the 100 years since that vote and this year’s walk will try to cover some of it.
“This walk will be a little different from previous years,” said Tom Schott, chair of the Lantern Walk. “There will be 10 stops on the walk, each featuring a highlight from the one of the 10 decades following the historic 1914 vote.”
Admission to the Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk is $5 for adults and $3 for students, with children sixth grade and younger free if accompanied by an adult. All proceeds benefit the DuBois Area Historical Society. The program is suitable for all ages.
There is a change from previous years for the timing of the walks. Due to demand, three tours will leave in the daylight at 5 p.m., 5:20 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. After a brief break, tours will resume at 7 p.m. and leave every 20 minutes thereafter.
To make advance reservations for a specific walk time, telephone 814-371-4627 between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., starting Sept. 22. Tour groups will be limited to 20 people. Walk-ins are also welcome and will be assigned to the next available tour. The walk is approximately one mile and will last a little more than an hour.
This year’s “Spirits” will include: a reminiscing husband, an underemployed worker, a “colorful” mother, a future racer, five youth concerned with a merger, a tired employee, a Odocoileus virginianus looking for entertainment, a man in search of a dance, a medical businessman, a woman who likes to ring in and a satisfied customer.
“We are very pleased that we have seven people 18 years old and under performing this year,” said Schott. “It is good to have this many young people interested in history.”
The performers include: Mel Amrheian, Amanda Amrhein, Darius Clement, Sharon Folmar, Ryan Haggerty, Ben Hayes, Beecher Klingensmith, Zach Munn, Noah Orner, Merica Pallone, Carolyn Rhoades, Nancy Rosman, Tom Shade, Caleb Thompson and Levi Thompson.
