Corbett Calls on State Board of Education to Conduct a Public Review of PA’s Academic Standards
HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett has asked for a continued public review of Pennsylvania-specific academic content in English language arts and mathematics standards from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
This is the final phase in his nearly three-year effort to permanently roll back the national Common Core plan implemented by his predecessor, Gov. Ed Rendell.

Public Hearing Precedes DuBois City Council Meeting
DUBOIS – A public hearing was held for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program prior to the start of the DuBois City Council meeting on Monday night.
The first public hearing was to discuss and describe the GDBG, as well as to allow for public participation.
House Advances Legislation to Restore State-Federal Partnership Created Under Clean Water Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 5078, the Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act, with bipartisan support by a vote of 262-152.
U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5), who voted to support the legislation, issued the following statement:
Commissioners Approve RCAP Extension for Pennsylvania Grain Processing
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners approved a one-year extension to its RCAP grant agreement with Pennsylvania Grain Processing, which has plans to improve its facilities.
During board discussion, Commissioner Joan Robinson-McMillen noted this was the third time the county has awarded an RCAP extension for these monies. PGP, she said, has requested extensions, so it can use $750,000 leftover from the plant’s construction.
CLEARFIELD – Yesterday, the Clearfield County Commissioners supported their local coal industry by calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider its proposed Clean Power Plant rule.
Further, the commissioners called for the EPA to either withdraw its proposed CPP rule, or to revise it to eliminate the “economic shocks” expected to occur in critical coalfield communities across the country.
Kane: PA Child Victim Identified in Texas Predator’s Pornography Files
HARRISBURG – Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane announced that a Pennsylvania child has been identified as one of the victims in a Texas man’s child pornography collection that he allegedly amassed by threatening children across the United States and internationally into sending him naked photos of themselves through Facebook.
The Montgomery County (Texas) Internet Crimes Against Children Division last month arrested Timothy Jerome Alcala of Conroe, Texas and has been working to find Alcala’s victims, who so far have been identified in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Australia.
Former Office Manager Accused of Stealing from Employer Waives Hearing
CLEARFIELD – A former office manager accused of stealing more than $107,000 from Walter Hopkins and Company LLP of Clearfield waived her right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Jonelle S. Smeal, 47, of Woodland has been charged with multiple counts of theft by unlawful taking; theft by deception; forgery; access device issued to another who did not authorize use; other reason access device is unauthorized by issuer; and receiving stolen property; and then tampering with records or ID-writing.
New Streaming Video Gives 511PA Users Better Traffic Information
HARRISBURG – PennDOT has announced that streaming video from its more than 700 traffic cameras is now available on 511PA.
PennDOT recently upgraded its 511PA Web site and mobile application to allow for the continuously streaming footage. Previously, the site and mobile application were limited to providing real-time conditions using still images that were refreshed every five seconds.
County to Request Updated Reptile Study at Proposed Boggs Twp. Landfill Site
CLEARFIELD – On Tuesday, the Clearfield County Commissioners announced plans to contact the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and to request an updated reptile study for the site of the proposed Camp Hope Run landfill in Boggs Township.
The commissioners were contacted by a concerned individual about the rattlesnake population at the proposed landfill site. The individual also provided the commissioners with some “very good” photographs of the rattlesnake population, said Commissioner Mark B. McCracken.
New Millport Man Waives Hearing in Aggravated Assault, Fleeing and Eluding Case
CLEARFIELD – A New Millport man accused of nearly hitting state police patrol units while attempting to flee and who resisted being taken into custody waived his right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Joshua Jeffrey Nelson, 29, of New Millport has been charged with burglary, aggravated assault, criminal trespass, DUI, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer and related offenses.

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield pharmacist was suspended for a period of four years because he pleaded guilty to felony charges in a federal court.
According to court documents, 45-year-old Eric Vern Fox of Clearfield, Clearfield County, was suspended for a period of four years because he pleaded guilty to felony charges in a federal court.
Clearfield Revitalization Names Main Street Manager
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Revitalization Corp. (CRC) has named Loretta Wagner as its Main Street manager, according to CRC President Katie Penoyer.

NY Man Waives Hearing in Fleeing and Eluding Case
CLEARFIELD – A New York man accused of driving a tow truck recklessly on Interstate 80 and fleeing from state police while intoxicated waived his right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Weilin Song, 33, of Flushing, NY has been charged with fleeing and eluding an officer; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; DUI; careless driving; reckless driving; and related offenses. He’s currently incarcerated at the CCJ in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Taste of Home Releases Recipe Demo List for Cooking School
CLEARFIELD – Taste of Home has released its recipe demonstration list for its fall cooking school on Sept. 20 at the Expo II Building at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds.

Clearfield Borough Holds CDBG Public Hearing
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council held the first of two public hearings required in the Community Development Block Grant application process last evening before its committee meeting.
The purpose of the first public hearing is to provide opportunities for the general public to participate in planning for future projects by identifying needs of low and moderate income residents.
Police Investigating Knife Incident at Clearfield Junior-Senior High School
HYDE – A male student allegedly possessed a knife and directed threats toward a classmate yesterday afternoon at the Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School, according to Lawrence Township police.
The student was found in possession of the knife during the lunch period. He was taken to the principal’s office where police were advised he’d allegedly threatened a classmate by saying he’d “cut” him, police said.
