CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Golden Tide football team made it two in a row on the 2014 season, opening their home schedule Friday night with a 34-12 win over visiting Otto-Eldred.
A late arriving Otto-Eldred team bus pushed kick-off back to 7:15 pm.
The Terrors played well considering they pulled into the Riverside Stadium parking lot at 6:42 pm.
The contest was actually no contest at the start, as Curwensville went into high gear from the beginning, scoring the only points of the first quarter.
Freshman Nick Stewart went 77 yards on the first play of the Tide’s first possession and with Heather Thorp’s extra point it was quickly 7-0 in favor of Curwensville with 10:46 left in the opening frame.
Hunter Johnson scored with 1:25 left in the first on a four yard run and the Thorp PAT made it 14-0 Curwensville heading into the second quarter.
The Tide stretched the margin to 21-0 at the 6:27 mark on a six yard run by Stewart and another Thorp PAT making it look like the second half would have the mercy rule coming into play.
A Jake Lancaster interception and return of about 20 yards to the Otto-Eldred seven yard line helped set up Stewart’s second TD of the contest.
The Terrors then got on the board as sophomore Seth Drummonds trotted 13 yards to the end zone with 2:49 left in the second quarter. The PAT was no good.
Leading 21-6, the Golden Tide scored just 18 seconds later on a 66 yard touchdown pass from Travis Lansberry to Quamone Newkirk to go into the intermission up 27-6 as the point after was no good.
There were only two scores in the second half with Otto-Eldred turning Drummond loose on a 71 yard touchdown run in the third quarter with 6:54 left. The two point conversion attempt failed.
After three quarters it was 27-12 with the Tide out in front, but the Terrors still in the game.
Curwensville put the game away with 7:42 remaining as sophomore Kaleb Witherite scored from 14 yards out. Thorp’s extra point set the final at 34-12.
Otto-Eldred drops to 0-2 on the year and next Friday will be back at home to play Ridgway.
Curwensville is on the road next Friday, traveling to Coudersport to battle with the Falcons. Coudersport is 0-2 on the year having lost to Brockway on Friday night, 48-0.
