John R. “Dick” Flanagan, 82, of Clearfield went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014 surrounded and cared for by his family in the comfort of his home.

Born Oct. 24, 1931, he was the son of the late James L. and Levina M. (Kennedy) Flanagan.

Mr. Flanagan was a graduate of Clearfield High School in the class of 1949. He was employed with the Iron Workers, Local No. 3, Pittsburgh, from 1955–1996 when he retired.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the Olmstead ship 188.

Mr. Flanagan was a member of the St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, Clearfield, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Clearfield VFW, Clearfield American Legion, Clearfield BPOE and the Chinklacamoose Canoe Club.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn J. (Smay) Flanagan, whom he married on July 27, 1957 at the St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, Clearfield and four daughters and a son, Maureen Johnston and her husband, Daniel of Morrisdale; Linda Newpher and her husband, Robert, James Flanagan and his wife, JoAnn and Joyce Ott and her husband, Alan, all of Curwensville; and Michelle Strickland and her husband, H. Richard of Clearfield.

He’s survived by grandchildren, Adrianne Robinson and her husband, Garret, Matthew Johnston and his wife, Julie, Melissa Newpher and her fiancé, Bryan Edwards, Kristi Scatko and her husband, Mike, Carrie Flanagan, Samantha Palmer and her fiancé, Michael Aughenbaugh, Cory Palmer, Leslie Palmer, Joey Palmer, Jocelyn Ott, Jilyn Ott, Savannah Strickland and Ciara Strickland and four great-grandchildren, Ethan and Parker Robinson and Hunter and Arianna Aughenbaugh.

He’s also survived by four sisters, Carol Anderson and her husband, Joel of Bainebridge, Wash., Margaret Bell and Pat Rumfola and her husband, Jack, both Clearfield, and Joan Domico and her husband, Patrick of Curwensville; a sister-in-law, Margie Hertlein of Karthaus; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rosemary Hoy; and four brothers, James, Leon, Sheridan ”Bud” and Terrill Flanagan.

Honoring Mr. Flanagan’s wishes, there will be no public viewing. A memorial mass will be announced at a later date.
