PUNXSUTAWNEY – State Police Capt. Bernard J. Petrovsky, the commanding officer of Troop C, has reminded motorists to use caution while traveling over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
“With Labor Day being the last major holiday of the summer, many people will take the opportunity to picnic and gather with friends and relatives,” said Petrovsky. “Please remember to obey the posted speed limit and buckle up while traveling to these events.”
As with all major travel periods, state police will patrol the roadways and place emphasis on specific violators, such as motorists who speed, drive aggressively, drive intoxicated or those who fail to wear a safety belt.
“Young drivers have been the center of attention lately with new laws being passed to help ensure safe roadways,” said Petrovsky.
“Distracted driving is a noticeable problem, especially with young drivers. Remember, it is against the law to text while driving. And, a junior operator shall carry no more than one passenger less than 18 years of age for the first year of driving.”
School is now open, which brings many pedestrians near roadways. Motorists who pass a school bus with flashing red lights put a child’s life in danger and will receive a substantial fine and license suspension.
“We ask that you always pay close attention to the areas around our roads,” said Petrovsky. “Take extra caution this time of year to ensure our children’s safety while waiting for the school bus. Drive carefully and buckle up, it saves lives.”
