CONCERT REVIEW: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Rock Out at Clearfield Fair

CLEARFIELD – Dressed in classic black, Joan Jett stepped up to the mic and her adoring rock fans erupted Saturday night at the grandstand stage at the Clearfield County Fair. With a few guitar chords, she instantly took command of the stage with “Bad Reputation” from 1980.
Jett’s second song was The Runaways’ classic hit, “Cherry Bomb.” She continued her old-school rock storm with “Do You Wanna Touch Me?” The hard rocker reminded her fans that it was important to breathe while singing “yeah … oh yeah.”
Morgan Presented with Outstanding Fair Ambassador Award
CLEARFIELD – Brenda Morgan was presented with the 2014 Outstanding Fair Ambassador Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture in recognition of her “outstanding leadership, volunteerism and dedication” to the Clearfield County Fair.
Advance Tickets On Sale for Taste of Home Cooking School
CLEARFIELD – Advance tickets are now on sale for the Taste of Home magazine 2014 Cooking Show to be held Sept. 20 at the Expo II Building at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds.
General admission tickets are $15 each and include entry into the vendor showcase. It will also include a gift bag from Taste of Home magazine and local sponsors.
VIP tickets are $30 and also include a catered hors d’oeuvres reception and “meet n’ greet” with the Taste of Home culinary expert, Chef Char Morse, prior to the event as well as reserved, prime seating.

DUBOIS – At last night’s Sandy Township meeting, Supervisor Dave Sylvis opened comments with “thanks [to] WhiteWave Foods for bringing jobs to the area.”
This comment was spurred by a visit to the newly renovated plant hosted by Plant Manager, Andy Morris, on Aug. 1. Attendees included several supervisors, other township representatives and the Clearfield County Commissioners.
Big Rig Expo and Thrills in the Hills Returning to Clearfield Fairgrounds
CLEARFIELD – Members of the Clearfield County Fair & Park Board have announced two, upcoming fall events that will be held at the fairgrounds.
The Big Rig Expo will be held on Sept. 5-6 and will feature a Big Rig show, parade and truck pulls. The truck pulls will be held on the evening of Sept. 6.
Tickets for the truck pulls are $13 for adults and $6 for kids (ages 5 – 10 years). Admission to the expo is free.
Mill Road Paving Begins Aug. 11
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors announced at last night’s meeting that the long-anticipated paving of Mill Road is scheduled to begin Aug. 11.
Greenland Construction Inc., Clearfield, was awarded the project for $544,935 at the June 17 township meeting.
Late Clearfield County Commissioner, Chief Clerk Remembered
CLEARFIELD – During yesterday’s work session, the Clearfield County Commissioners took a moment to remember the late Eleanor (Williams) Ludwig, who was the county’s “first lady commissioner.”
Ludwig of LaJose died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 at Colonial Courtyard, Tyrone. She was 88 years old. Ludwig was the Clearfield County Chief Clerk from 1984-1991 and took office as commissioner in 1992.
Clearfield Commissioners Open Courthouse Painting Bids
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners opened bids for the exterior painting of the courthouse at yesterday’s work session.
The commissioners received two bids for the painting project. ARS Inc. of Bridgeville submitted the lowest bid in the amount of $253,000. A second bid from A.J. Vater & Co. Inc. of McKees Rocks was for $282,487.
Chief Clerk Lisa McFadden asked the commissioners if they wanted to approve a bid package pending the engineer’s review. She noted there were concerns about the timeframe for the painting project.
WJAC-TV: FirstEnergy’s PA Utilities Request Rate Increases

READING – The four Pennsylvania subsidiaries of FirstEnergy Corp. are seeking rate increases to help pay for infrastructure enhancements.
The subsidiaries filed rate plans with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission on Monday.
Under the proposals, residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours a month would see their bills increase by 11.8 percent for Penn Power, 14.7 percent for West Penn Power, 16.3 percent for Penelec and 17.8 percent for Met-Ed.
WJAC-TV: Clearfield Councilman Arrested on Assault Charges

CLEARFIELD – A local councilman has been accused of assaulting his girlfriend and threatening to kill her, according to Clearfield Borough police.
Richard Stewart, 46, of 111 E. Market St., Apt. 2, has been charged with terroristic threats, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. The charges stem from an alleged assault that occurred late Tuesday night.
According to the criminal complaint, Stewart’s girlfriend described him as “hot tempered” after they attended a baseball game. While at Stewart’s parents’ house after the game, she inquired about a party he planned to attend. The couple then allegedly engaged in an argument over who he’d been in contact with.
LT Supers Address Dust Complaints
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors heard from a resident at Tuesday night’s meeting regarding road dust issues.
Supervisor and Roadmaster Ed Brown said the township has been unable to treat gravel/dirt roads with dust oil material because of the rainy weather. He said the company that provides the material advised that it’s best to have at least three to four days of dry weather to apply the dust oil material and that applying during rainy weather makes the material ineffective.

Staten Island, NY, United States (NewsBahn) – A Pennsylvania man suspected in the murder of his wife reportedly shot and killed himself after taking off for Staten Island with their two sons.
The pair of boys, ages 4 and 6, were unharmed in the incident.

The Action Implements Thompson’s Forest Product Fairness Act Included as Part of the 2014 Farm Bill
CORRY – On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a final rule eliminating the restrictions on including mature market wood products in the USDA’s Bio-Preferred program.
The action implements legislation sponsored by U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5), commonly known as the Forest Products Fairness Act. It was included as part of the final 2014 Farm Bill and signed into law on Feb. 7.

PUNXSUTAWNEY BOROUGH (EYT) – Punxsutawney Borough Police Department arrested a 34-year-old man yesterday on a slew of charges related to child pornography.
According to a criminal complaint issued on Aug. 6, officials issued a summons for 34-year-old Allen James Pierce, charging him with 100 counts of child pornography.
On May 4, police took a call to respond to Oakland Avenue in the borough of Punxsutawney. The call was in reference to some CDs that the caller found. Upon arrival the officers spoke with two known individuals.
Maximum Speed Limit Increases to 70 MPH Monday on Two Interstates
CLEARFIELD – Motorists are advised that the maximum speed limit will be raised to 70 miles per hour on two roadways as sign installations begin on Monday.

Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Two U.S. warplanes bombed a mobile artillery of Islamic militants in northern Iraq on Friday to stop it from shelling Kurdish troops and protect the staff of the U.S. consulate in Erbil.
The F/A-18 fighter jets took off from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush in the Persian Gulf and dropped a 500-pound laser-guided bomb on the artillery being used by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) forces against Kurdish troops defending Erbil, Defense Department spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement.
