Programs Announced at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – Officials at the Parker Dam State Park have announced the program schedule for July 31-Aug. 4.

Thursday, July 31

Evening Walk

6:30 p.m. – Lou and Helen Adams CCC Museum

Enjoy a leisurely guided walk down the CCC Trail.  This trail was used by the CCC boys to walk from their camp (north end of the park) to their work site (building the park).  The trail had been closed shortly after the 1985 tornado but was reopened recently to once again allow travel.  Wear appropriate footwear – hike approximately two miles.

Friday, Aug. 1

Campfire Talk

7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Learn some traditional ways of starting your campfire and perhaps try your hand at it.  The gather round the campfire and enjoy a conversation with park staff.  Bring a folding chair if you would like to sit near the fire.

Saturday, Aug. 2

Elk 101

11 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Come discover more about how elk live, survive, and coexist in Pennsylvania.  It’s now 101 years since the elk have returned; isn’t it time you learned their extensive history?

Deer Signs

3 p.m. – Beach House Steps 

Many times we don’t see deer in the park, but we know that they are here.  Learn to recognize deer sign (tracks, droppings, and more) and then play a game to test your knowledge.

Oh Deer

8 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater 

Deer are popular with park visitors.  Take a closer look at how deer survive in our forests by taking a short walk to look over food availability, playing the game- “Oh, Deer”, listening to a short talk about perceived deer issues, and watching a short video.

Sunday, Aug. 3

E-Parachute Games

3 p.m. – Beach House 

Parachute games, yes … but what is the “E”?  E is for “environmental”.  Play “Popcorn”, “Oven”, “Mushroom”, “Mouse Trap”, and “Okefenokee” – all while learning something about the life that can be found in the park (or not).

Tea and Talk

7 p.m. – Beach House

Come to the beach house and bring your own mug to enjoy a cup of sweet fern/mountain mint tea, gathered right here in the park.  The talk will consist of teas, a few trees, and whatever else comes to your inquiring mind.

Monday, Aug. 4

Crepuscular to Night Hike

8:30 p.m. – Beach House

Many animals and insects are active at twilight (crepuscular).  Enjoy this guided walk to discover what goes on out there in the twilight – and the night.  Wear appropriate footwear – hike will last approximately one hour.
