STATE COLLEGE – Traffic pattern changes will begin this week as bridge preservation work continues in Centre County.
Three different sites will see new or continuing work as noted below. Once rehabilitation work is complete, area drivers will enjoy safer travel on bridges that will remain in service for years to come.
Starting the week of July 14, drivers will encounter restrictions at the following locations:
- On Route 64 near the village of Nittany in Walker Township, the contractor will be installing temporary traffic signals on Monday. The signals will be in flash mode until Thursday, when they will be fully operational and enforce a single-lane, alternating traffic pattern. Work will then proceed for the installation of a new deck and parapets. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place through Oct. 3.
- On westbound Route 322 in Worth Township near the Reese Hollow Road/East Mountain Road exit, the roadway will continue to be reduced to a single lane in the westbound direction. Bridge work will include a new latex concrete overlay, installation of new approach slabs, and miscellaneous concrete repairs. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place through Oct.3.
- A Route 322 bridge that spans Sinking Creek near the SPCA, east of Boalsburg, a traffic switch will take place Tuesday. During the day on Tuesday, the roadway will be reduced to a single lane, regulated by flaggers. Traffic control will be set up to close the center portion of the roadway so the remaining bridge work can be finished. Work will involve eradicating paint lines, painting new lines, and resetting temporary barrier. Traffic will be able to flow freely in both directions at the end of the work day. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place through Aug. 21.
This work is part of a $2.2 million contract to preserve five bridges in Centre County, with all work weather and schedule dependent. Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor on this project. The other two bridges include:
- A Route 3040 in Julian where work is ongoing. There is a 13-foot width restriction in effect through July. The zone is regulated by temporary traffic signals.
- A Route 322 bridge that spans Galbraith Run near Boalsburg where work is ongoing. Remaining work will be done under daylight traffic control, enforced by flaggers in the roadway.
Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits, move through work zones with caution and always buckle up.
