Marsh Creek Bridge Replacement Starts Monday in Centre County

Detour will be in place

STATE COLLEGE – Work to replace a Marsh Creek bridge on Route 1002 in Centre County will start Monday.

At that time, the bridge will be closed and a detour will be in place. The open-gate bridge spans Little Marsh Creek in Curtin Township, west of the village of Romola.

When work is complete, PennDOT will be able to remove the bridge from Centre County’s structurally deficient list and area drivers will enjoy travel across a modern structure.

Signage is in place alerting area drivers to the upcoming closure and detour. Originally built in 1937, the current bridge is 48 feet long and carries an average of 261 vehicles each day. It will be replaced with a single span, concrete box-beam bridge.

The replacement work requires closing the bridge and a lengthy detour will be in place. PennDOT’s official detour is approximately 21 miles long and uses Routes 1002 (Marsh Creek Road), 1001 (Howard Divide Road), 150 and 4007 (Moose Run Road).

The closure and detour will be in effect until late November. Drivers familiar with the area may choose to use alternate routes.

Overall work includes removal of the current bridge, placement of the new bridge, paving, guide rail updates, and miscellaneous items. This is the first of two bridges to be replaced through a $1.2 million contract with Nestlerode Contracting Company Inc. of Lock Haven.

The second bridge, also on Route 1002, will be replaced in 2015 and is located east of the Curtin/Boggs Township line. All work is weather and schedule dependent.

Drivers are reminded to follow official detour signs, obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.
