HARRISBURG – The state House recently passed legislation sponsored by State Rep. Tommy Sankey (R-Clearfield) that recognizes a Clearfield County veteran for his service during World War II. House Bill 1818, which passed unanimously, may now be taken up by the state Senate.
“House Bill 1818 would designate the portion of state Route 3005 that crosses the Susquehanna River’s west branch in Greenwood Township as the First Lieutenant Wendell Elbert Ross Memorial Bridge,” said Sankey.
“This soldier’s role in the war was brought to my attention by Kline Redden, one of our constituents who lives in Mahaffey, and I am proud to help with the effort to have him memorialized.”
Ross was born in Lumber City, and was a member of Company B, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. While serving his country in Italy, he lost his life in the line of duty on Feb. 11, 1944, as the result of sniper fire.
