Parker Dam Announces Programs

PENFIELD – Officials at the Parker Dam State Park have announced its schedule of programs for May 30-June 1.

Friday, May 30

Fly Fishing Basics:

3 p.m. – along Cabin Rd., near flagpole

Maybe you’ve never fished before, but always wanted to learn how?  Perhaps you have used a spinning rod in the past and feel like trying something new?  You’ll be introduced to fly-fishing when you join the naturalist to practice fly-casting, basic knots, and discuss techniques.

Evening Souders Trail Hike

7 p.m. – Ball Field

Join us for a peaceful evening walk along the Souders Trail.  Participants will learn about the history of the park as we look for remnants of the lumber era and signs of spring life.  Please wear appropriate footwear and if possible, bring a set of binoculars along.

Saturday, May 31

Trail of New Giants

10 a.m. – Lou and Helen Adams CCC Museum

It’s one of the most popular park trails.  Come learn why as we take a moderately difficult walk up the trail through a recovering forest on the anniversary of a destructive natural disaster.  The vista experienced at the highest spot in Parker Dam State Park is well worth it.

Stream Investigation

3 p.m. – Ball Field

Join the naturalist as we embark on a voyage into Laurel Run!  Participants will get the opportunity to explore the stream as we discover some of the small creatures that live there and methods that are used to determine stream quality and health.

A Prophet for All Seasons

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Come watch footage of some magnificent scenery as you learn all about one of America’s great conservationists, Aldo Leopold.  This biography will provide insight to the events that led to Leopold’s ideals and inspire those who watch.

Sunday, June 1

Discover the Atlatl

2 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Is it a bow, or a spear, or a slingshot? The atlatl, a primitive hunting tool, can be very effective.  Learn about its history, how one is made, and even watch as its use is demonstrated.  Some folks may even get to try it out for themselves.
