Library Encourages Community to “Fizz, Boom, Read!” this Summer

CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library would like to invite the community to join the annual collaborative summer reading program.

This year’s theme, “Fizz, Boom, Read!,” explores a variety of science topics from robots to experiments to geology and much, much more.

The online registration for the summer reading program begins May 19 and is open to all ages, – pre-school through adult. It will feature exciting performers, guest presenters, special event programs and an array of activities throughout June and July.

Interested members of the community can join the program from home by visiting the library webpage at www.clearfield.org/shaw and following the links to the registration form.

The library also offers public access to computers for on-site program registration. Anyone with questions or in need of assistance is encouraged to call or stop by the library during regular business hours.

According to Library Director Paula Collins, children learn best when their learning is not interrupted and summer vacation is a long interruption.  Without practice, she said children forget facts and important “how to” skills.

The Shaw Public Library’s summer program helps children’s minds stay active by bridging the gap between school years, said Collins. She added that nurturing a more literate society is one of five literacies in PA Forward, an initiative of the Pennsylvania Library Association.

Collins said that research shows that a child’s library use raises his or her fourth grade assessment scores.   “You can help us to spark learning in all of our children this summer by supporting and participating in the summer library program,” she said.
