PHILIPSBURG — The Clearfield Area High School softball team was jolted by Philipsburg-Osceola’s 10-run outburst in the first inning of their Mountain League doubleheader and never recovered at Curtis Park Thursday.
The Lady Mounties proved to the Lady Bison why they‘re sitting atop the league at 11-1 and once again rank among the teams to beat in District 6 Class AA at 15-2 during their 11-0 and 11-1 victories that were shortened to five innings because of the 10-run Mercy Rule.
Clearfield (6-11, 4-9 ML) mustered only four hits against Chelsey Henry and Morgan Williamson, who pitched in both games for P-O.
Lauren Butler’s single prevented a no-hitter in the opener.
After having an eight-game hitting streak ended in the shutout, Megan Vanderburgh cracked her second home run of the season in the first inning of the nightcap for the lone Lady Bison run of the long afternoon while Rachel Hoffman and Taylor Luzier beat out infield hits.
Henry starred for P-O in the first game by driving in three runs with a double and a home run in addition to pitching three innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Williamson set down six of the seven batters she faced, four on strikes.
Haley Frank doubled twice and Kenzie Burge also had two hits with Frank, Haylee Hayward and Williamson contributing two RBIs apiece.
The P-O pitching roles were reversed in the second game, Williamson working four innings for the win and Henry mopping up in the fifth. They had two strikeouts apiece.
Hayward topped the Lady Mounties with three hits, two of them doubles, and Frank knocked in three runs with a double and a single.
The second game originally was scheduled at Clearfield but was postponed three times.
The Lady Bison will visit Bellefonte for their league finale Monday before hosting Altoona on Senior Day Tuesday and closing the regular season at Hollidaysburg Thursday.
