HYDE — Rachel Hoffman blasted a pair of long two-run homers and Taylor Luzier drove in three runs with a double and a single as the Clearfield Area High School softball team defeated Tyrone 13-3 in six innings at the Bison Sports Complex Friday afternoon.
Backed by an 11-hit attack that also included triples by Karlie Lewis and Victoria Ireland, Raeleigh Redden went the distance in the circle for the win, her first of the season in three starts.
Redden scattered eight hits, keeping the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard except for the fourth inning. The sophomore right-hander struck out three and didn’t allow a walk to even her record.
The Mercy Rule victory was the second in five days against Tyrone for Clearfield, which scored in every at-bat to improve to 4-6 in the Mountain League and 4-8 overall.
The first of Hoffman’s two circuit clouts to deep left center put the Lady Bison on top in the first inning, two more runs scoring on Luzier’s RBI double and the third Lady Eagle misplay.
Hoffman’s fourth homer of the season made it 6-0 after two frames. She’s working on a 15-game hitting streak that began late last season.
The Lady Bison added two runs in the third, one on Molly Sartin’s single, and then matched the Lady Eagles’ three-spot in the fourth. Luzier chased home two teammates with her double and scored on a single by Lauren Butler to increase the margin to 11-3.
The three-baggers were converted into runs in the next two frames, Lewis scoring on a single by Megan Vanderburgh and Ireland crossing the plate on Sartin’s walk-off sacrifice fly.
Vanderburgh had two singles for her fifth multi-hit game in a row and eighth of the spring.
The Lady Bison will travel to Spring Mills on Monday to face Penns Valley in Mountain League action.
