Lady Tide Mishandle Cardinals 9-1 In Softball Action

DUBOIS – The Curwensville Area High School softball team (5-4) suffered a defensive let-down Monday to drop a 9-1 decision to Dubois Central Catholic.  The Lady Tide committed seven errors, four in the first inning, to contribute to the loss.

The Lady Cardinals sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first on just two hits to take a 3-0 lead.  Kylee Schaffer’s two-run double and Riley Assalone’s RBI single accounted for the three runs.  Without the errors, none of the runs would have scored.

“This was without a doubt the worst defensive game we have played this season,” said Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey.  “These things happen, and we have to let it go and sure things up.”

Schaffer doubled again in the second to score Jordy Frank who had singled to lead off.  The run was one of two earned runs on the afternoon off of Tide pitcher Tierra Shope.  Assalone doubled in the sixth inning to push Schaffer home for the second earned run.

Curwensville scored its lone run in the third inning as Abby Dugo led off with a base hit.  Dugo went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shope and then scored on a throwing error on a ground ball by Alaina Stiles.

DCC added five runs in their final three at bats on four hits to put the final score at 9-1.  Schaffer paced the Cardinals with three hits and three RBI including two doubles.  Frank and Assalone both had two hits in the win.

Dugo slapped out two hits to pace the Lady Tide.  In the circle, Shope struck out five and walked two in six innings of work giving up nine hits and two earned runs.

Curwensville will try to put Monday’s mishaps behind them as they travel to Johnsonburg Tuesday in a make-up game.
