Spring Mills — The Clearfield Area high School track and field teams completed their Mountain League dual season on Tuesday afternoon in a tri-meet hosted by the Penns Valley Rams.
The boys team swept the meet to complete a 7-0 dual meet campaign and claim the regular season Mountain League Championship. They easily outdistanced Huntingdon 94-56, but need every point they could get in a narrow 78-72 victory over Penns Valley.
The girls also easily beat Huntingdon, 96-53; but were defeated 82-68 by the host Lady Rams.
Bison Head Coach John Jacob had nothing but high praise for the boy’s effort, night only on the night, but the whole season thus far as well, “It was a great win for the boys team against Penns Valley tonight. Last year we were within five points of our first Mountain League Championship and an undefeated season. To come down to Penns Valley today as the underdogs and pick up the win speaks volumes about this team. Everyone had a hand in the victory and it came down to the boys 4×400 relay team. All four boys – Royer, Caldwell, Wilsoncroft and Climie put everything they had into tonight’s race. It took our fastest time of the year and capped off an very exciting win for our first Mountain League title.”
Leading the Bison, as they have for most of the season were Alec Freeman and Mason Royer, each picking up two individual wins against Penns Valley.
Coach Jacob added this about the boy’s individual efforts, “Individually, Alec Freeman had another great night in the distance events putting away one of his toughest opponents of the year, Nick Fuller. He has been a leader all year and his two victories were one of the big keys to our narrow win. In the hurdle department Mason Royer also came away with another two victories. For a freshman, Mason has been the go-to person in two relays and our hurdle events. It is really impressive how focused he is in practice and in meets. Two other underclassmen that have filled key spots in relays and sprints have been Jake Wingate and Seth Caldwell. For young sprinters they have come through in some very tough races and have been moved around in a variety of
events. Their versatility is one of the keys to making us a very strong team.”
The defending Mountain League Champion Clearfield girls fell a little short of the title this year. Coach Jacob had this to say about the girls meet, “For the girls, we fell just a couple of points short of the Mountain League Championship. With two impressive performances by the Penns Valley long jumpers, it put
the meet a little out of our reach. We can take a lot of positives away from this meet and I believe we may be able to compete come the Mountain League
Championship meet in early May. Individually, Sarah Lash stood out in the javelin with a personal best 109-11. She has been adjusting her throw the past couple of meets and it was nice to see her put it all together. Also the girls relays had an impressive night shutting out both Penns Valley and Huntingdon in all 3 relays.”
The Bisons will host one final dual meet on Tuesday April 29 when non-league opponents Hollidaysburg and St. Marys come to the Bison Sports Complex.
