CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Middle School Student Council made a $200 donation to the Gerald Read Memorial Scholarship.

The check in honor of Gerald Read was presented to Mr. David Read, retired Clearfield School District teacher and his wife, sixth grade math teacher, Mrs. Melody Read.

Presenting the check are seventh grade student council members, Katlyne Fye, Ally Hertlein, Makeeli Redden, Chloe Brower, Stacey Houchins, and Kelci Van Tassel. The student council advisor is Mrs. Karen Ward.

The scholarship fund was created Dec. 23, 2013 by the Clearfield High School Class of 1973 as a way to honor Gerald Read’s life. “Donations will help keep his story and memory alive,” stated Ward. “Jerry was a 30-year military veteran who retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

“He died a hero saving a co-worker’s life during the Navy Shipyard massacre last September, which resulted in the death of 11 other co-workers. A 1973 graduate of CHS, Jerry was also an Eagle Scout who graduated from Indiana University of PA. He was working as a civilian expert in cyber security for the U.S. Navy at the time of his death.”

A scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded this spring to an Eagle Scout who will be graduating from CHS and who plans to attend college next fall. Applications are available from the any of the local Boy’s Scout Packs, the CHS guidance office and the Clearfield County Community Foundation (CCCF).
