Clearfield Track and Field Teams Sweep Bellefonte, P-O

Philipsburg — The Clearfield Bison track and field teams opened their dual season on Tuesday afternoon with both the boys and girls sweeping Bellefonte and Philipsburg-Osceola to start the season 2-0.

The boys easily outdistanced both opponents, Bellefonte by a 102-47 score and P-O, 104-46. The girls also had no problem with P-O at 108-38, but just snuck by Bellefonte 80-70.

Alec Freeman was the top performer, as he won the 800 m, 1600 m, 3200 m, and was on the winning 4×800 m relay team.

Bison Head Coach John Jacob had plenty of praise to hand out after the meet, “The boys team had a great night all over the track.  The top performer of the night was quadruple winner Alec Freeman.  Alec swept every distance event on the track in both meets. His senior leadership is a going to be a real difference in a lot of meets this year.  The younger sprinters, Seth Caldwell and Jake Wingate, are becoming a deadly one-two punch.  I can’t  say enough about Seth stepping up and taking on some of the longer distance sprints like 4×400 relay.  I know the experience he gains there will pay off towards the end of the season.  Corey Shimmel and Mason Royer are taking their lumps in the hurdles. When they get some more experience and put together some complete races those two will be almost unbeatable.

“Our jumpers and vaulters had some great leaps with limited practice due to the weather conditions.  Grant Climie was able to jump over 19 feet for the first time in his career and is also narrowing in on the 40 foot mark in triple jump.  Casey Wilsoncroft and Jeremy Goodrow also impressed in the pole
vault.

“Ryan Lingle had a solid night in the throws and is providing a lot of leadership for our young throwers like Nate Lash and Matt Collins as they all continue to
improve.”

On the girls side of things, Jacob added, “We had a couple of runners sidelined, buth that allowed some of our younger runners to step into the spotlight.  Jill Heichel had a solid night winning the sprint events and the long jump. She has made herself very versatile by taking on the jumps.

“Freshman Sierra Luzier and Ally Lindstom also filled some key holes. Sierra played an important role in both relays and was able to come away with a key win in the 800 m. And Ally took a huge step forward by improving her times and winning both hurdle races.

The distance events were led by senior Lauren Conrad, who took on all four events and put in some very solid performances.  Becca Glenny was able to pick up her first win the 3200.  She has found her niche in the longer distance. I am looking for her to improve even more as the season goes on.

“And, once again, Sarah Lash was able to win or place in all three throwing events.”

Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday, when they travel to Martinsburg for a nother tri-meet. This time with host Central and Central Mountain.
