WINGATE — For the second Mountain League game in a row, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team outhit the opposition but came out on the short end of the score.
Bald Eagle Area, which has a quartet of four-year regulars, came from behind twice and then staved off a late Clearfield rally to escape with a 13-12 win in Tuesday afternoon’s wild scrap that had 22 hits, 10 walks, eight errors and 19 runners left on base.
Cole Kephart paced the Bison’s 12-hit attack with a single, double and triple, while Curtis Collins and Josh Sorbera had two singles apiece.
Sorbera and Jon Janocko each had a pair of runs batted in.
The Bison (0-2) put the Eagles (1-1) in a 5-0 hole in the first inning with five safeties, including run-scoring singles by Thomas Summers and Sorbera.
Back-to-back three-run innings by BEA made it 6-6 going after two, but Clearfield regained the lead in the fourth when Collins was safe on a miscue and scored on Janocko’s double.
However, BEA answered with five runs, all unearned because of two of Clearfield‘s four misplays, and added a pair in the fifth that proved all-important when the Bison erupted for another five-spot in the sixth.
Hits by Collins, Kephart and Josh Kennedy plus three walks and two errors had the Bison poised to pull it out. Down by a run, they had the bases loaded and only one out, but reliever Ryan Guenot recorded two big strikeouts.
Guenot fanned two more Bison in the seventh to save the win for Colton Comly.
Summers, the second of four Clearfield hurlers, suffered the loss.
Brandon Orsich closed with two hitless, scoreless innings after the first three pitchers had surrendered 10 hits and 10 walks.
Because of the errors, only six runs for each team were earned.
Clearfield’s junior varsity rallied in the late innings for an 8-6 victory after trailing 6-0.
Tommy Hazel belted a three-run home run while Logan Lykens, Dustin Fedder and Will Myers collected three hits apiece and Jonathan Trimpey added two more.
Clearfield goes to Martinsburg Wednesday for a make-up game against Central and will visit Bellefonte Thursday. Central outslugged BEA 20-10 in six innings Friday.
Mountain League – Bellefonte 2-0, Central 2-0, Tyrone 2-1, Bald Eagle Area 1-1, Huntingdon 1-1, Penns Valley 0-1, Clearfield 0-2, Philipsburg-Osceola 0-2.
