MILL HALL — The Clearfield Area High School softball team was unable to cope with Central Mountain’s Rachael Shady in the pitching circle or in the batter’s box Monday afternoon.
The senior veteran pitched a three-hitter and drove in six runs, four with a third-inning home run, to propel the Wildcats past the Lady Bison 12-1 in a non-league make-up halted after 4½ innings because of the Mercy Rule.
Shady, who two-hit defending District 6 Class AAA champion Hollidaysburg in a 4½-inning, 12-1 win Thursday, struck out five and walked two.
Devynn Ireland broke up the shutout with a sacrifice fly to deep left in the fourth inning after Rachel Hoffman had doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Central Mountain only had five hits off Raeleigh Redden but took advantage of 14 walks.
Shady’s grand slam homer to center highlighted a seven-run third inning that included a two-run dinger by Avery Shaffer.
The Wildcats added five runs in the fourth, with Shady belting a two-run double.
Mountain League foe Bald Eagle Area will be the opponent for Clearfield’s home opener at the Bison Sports Complex Tuesday when the Lady Bison strive to even their record at 2-2.
