Science Team Participates in Competitions

DUBOIS – Members of the DuBois Area High School Science Team recently competed in various events.

On March 21, the team competed at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Regional Chemistry Olympiad held in State College. DAHS students competing included Kayla Brennan, Gabriel French, Josh Hnat, Emily Krise, Noah Orner, Neel Rajan, and Melanie Umbaugh.

Hnat scored highest for DAHS and received a prize of $100. Brennan scored second highest and received a prize of $50. The testing materials, as well as food and beverages were provided by the ACS. In addition, ACS paid $100 to each school competing for reimbursement toward substitutes for the teachers present.

On March 11, the DAHS team recently competed in the Science Olympiad at Penn State Behrend Campus. Nineteen high schools competed at the event.

DAHS students competing included Kayla Brennan, Matthew Campbell, Alexander Feldbauer, Sawyer Rensel, Padon Rishell, Jacob Sutter, Andrew Wells and Aaron Wolfe. Two DAHS students, Sawyer Rensel and Andrew Wells, both received medals in the event Elastic Flyer.

The Science Olympiad is an international non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers.

On March 8, DAHS student Ashlyn Heberling competed in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Event. The event was held at the Penn State Altoona campus. Heberling’s title for her presentation was “The Effect of Ionic Liquids on the Separation of Bitumen from Oil Sand.” Heberling received a first place for her project and advanced to the state competition, which will be held at the Penn State main campus in State College

In all these events, the students were accompanied by Science Team coaches Doug Brennan and Mike Mancuso.
