HUNTINGDON — Clearfield out-hit Huntingdon 10-6, but five unearned runs gave the Bearcats a 7-6 win in the Mountain League opener for both teams at Juniata College’s Langdon-Goodale Field Thursday afternoon.
Thomas Summers singled three times and drove in three runs while Curtis Collins and Cole Kephart had two hits apiece for Clearfield in a game that was shifted from the Bison Sports Complex because the field still is unplayable.
Down 2-0, the Bison erupted for four runs in the fourth inning with a double by Collins and a single by Kephart setting the table. Jon Janocko, Summers and Josh Kennedy followed with run-scoring hits. Another run scored on Logan Puit’s grounder.
Huntingdon, which has eight returning starters, countered right away with four runs on just one hit, a bases-loaded triple by Tanner Cook. The Bearcats were aided by a misplay and three walks issued by Summers.
Clearfield came back again, knotting the score at 6-6 when Summers greeted Bearcat reliever Hunter Price with a two-run single after consecutive hits by Spencer Herrington, Collins and Kephart off Devon Claar filled the sacks.
Janocko, who had relieved in the fourth inning, allowed only one hit in 2-1/3 innings but suffered the loss when the Bearcats tallied the deciding run in the sixth on a walk, a stolen base and a Bison error.
That run made Price a winner for 2-2/3 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief work.
The Bison will stay on the road next week for games against Bald Eagle Area at Wingate Monday, Central at Martinsburg Wednesday and Bellefonte Thursday.
